Stem cells in hypometabolic state
Applying analogy with Djaja’s “resuscitated” animals, the atmosphere of hypoxia and hypercapnia allowed to introduce the stem cells in the hypometabolic state, which, consequently resulted in their long-term survival at temperatures approaching zero enabling their conservation without a classical cryopreservation (freezing).
Hypercapnic hypoxia in the movie The Abyss
In one scene the mini-sub is damaged and is taking on water. With only one functional diving suit, Lindsay opts to enter deep hibernation when the ocean's cold water engulfs her. What Lindsey is describing is essentially prof. Giaja's method of inducing hypothermia with hypercapnic hypoxia.
