The Institute of Physiology
The Institute of Physiology was founded in 1910 and the most of the credit for its creation belongs to Academician Jean Giaja (1884-1957) who laid the foundations for the development of Experimental Physiology at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade, the first not only in Serbia but also in the Balkans. Scientific discoveries in the field of thermoregulation and bioenergetics contributed to the reputation of Serbia in the world, and the Department of Physiology, under his leadership, became recognized in the global scientific community as the "Belgrade School of Physiology".
About this website:
This website aims to elucidate and bring to a wider research community the work of the Sorbone graduate and member of several national academies of sciences, the Serbian scientist, Professor Jean Giaja (Ivan Djaja). Prof. Giaja was an excellent physiologist and experimenter and his research on hibernation and hypothermia published mainly in the 1950s in esteemed journals still needs to be rediscovered for its particular significance to modern brain physiology, cardiology and low-temperature
physiology in general.
